John wrote this letter, possibly as late as 90 A.D. He writes about what they have personally witnessed concerning the Word of life who was with the Father and manifested to them. They proclaim it to the readers so they too may fellowship with them, and their fellowship is with the Father and Son. The message is that God is light. There is no darkness in Him. So if we walk in darkness, while saying we have fellowship with Him, we lie and don't practice truth. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we say we haven't sinned, we make Him a liar and His Word is not in us. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship and His blood cleanses us from all sin. If we confess our sin, He forgives us and cleanses us.

John says he writes this so they don't sin, but if we do, we have an advocate with the Father--Jesus Christ. We know we know Him if we keep His Word. If we say we know Him and don't keep His Word, we lie and the truth is not in us. The love of God has been perfected in the one who keeps His Word. The one who says he's in the light, but hates his brother, is in darkness. The one who loves his brother is in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. Darkness blinds the eyes of those who hate. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, are all passing away, but whoever does God's will lives forever.

Many antichrists have appeared. They went out from them, but were not really of them. The antichrist is the one who denies the Father and the Son. Don't believe every spirit. Many false prophets have gone out into the world. The antichrist does not confess Jesus. The Spirit of God confesses Jesus has come in the flesh. Those of the world speak like the world and the world listens to them. We are from God. He who knows God listens to us. This is how to know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Whoever denies the Son doesn't have the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. The anointing is in you and teaches you. What a great love the Father has given us that we would be called His children. When He appears we will be like Him. Having this hope fixed on Him purifies us. There is no sin in Him. He who is born of God does not practice sin. He can't because His seed abides in him. We know we've passed from death to life because we love the brethren. If your brother has need, and you have goods, but close your heart to him, how does the love of God dwell in you?

Don't love in word, but in deed and truth. If our heart doesn't condemn us, we have confidence before God that what we ask of Him we receive because we keep His commandment and do what pleases Him. The commandment is that we believe in the Name of His Son Jesus and love one another. Then we abide in Him and He lives in us, and we know it by the Spirit.

Jesus came by water and blood and the Spirit testifies because He's truth. The Spirit, water, and blood all agree. He who believes has this testimony in himself. The testimony is that God gave us eternal life and the life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life. He who doesn't have the Son, doesn't have life. He hears us if we ask according to His will. We may pray for a brother who committed a sin not leading to death, and God will give Him life. But not for a sin leading to death. No one who is born of God sins. God keeps him and the evil one doesn't touch him. Keep from idols.
  • Fellowship with the Father and the Son, and walking in the light, enables us to love our brothers and sisters.
  • He who confesses the Son has the Father, is born of God, contains His seed, and doesn't sin.
  • All things exposed to the light and the blood are cleansed.
  • Darkness blinds the eyes of those who hate.
  • The one who loves is in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
  • Believe in the Name of Jesus and love one another, you will have the fellowship and walk in the light.

John writes to a 'lady' and her children saying he was glad to find some of her children walking in truth. He is writing in regards to truth. He asks for her to keep the commandment they've had from the beginning. This is love--that we walk in His commandment. He warns against deceivers who don't acknowledge Jesus has come in the flesh. This is the deceiver and antichrist. Anyone who doesn't remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God. Don't receive him into your house and don't greet him. He says he has more to say, but wants to do it in person.
  • Be sure to stay true to the teaching of Jesus Christ and refuse the teachings of the deceiver and antichrist.
  • Stay on guard and walk in His commandments.
  • The influence you have over others is not to be taken lightly.

John wrote to Gaius praying that he prospers and is in good health just as his soul prospers. His greatest joy is to hear of his children walking in truth. He was glad to hear it from the brethren. He says they have been faithful in their love for the brethren and to send them out in a worthy manner for we ought to support such men who go out for the sake of the Name. He wrote to the church, but Diotrephes does not accept what they say--unjustly accuses them, forbidding those who desire to see the brethren, even putting them out of the church. Do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He says he has much to say but not with pen and ink. He hopes to see them soon.
  • Be faithful to support the brethren who work for the sake of the Name, being fellow workers with the truth.
  • Don't follow those who reject the brethren who do good--those who unjustly accuse.
  • Follow what is good for the one who does good is of God.

Jude Summaries

Jude says he feels the necessity to write to them asking that they contend earnestly for the faith which was once handed down. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who deny Jesus. He then reminds them of some throughout history who have ben destroyed--those who came out of Egypt and didn't believe, the angels who abandoned their proper place, the gross immorality of Sodom and Gomorrah, Cain, Balaam, Korah. These men also defile the flesh, reject authority, and revile angelic majesties. They revile what they don't understand. What they know by instinct--like unreasoning animals--by these things they'll be destroyed.

Enoch prophesied about them saying the Lord comes with many thousands of His holy ones to execute judgment on all, to convict the ungodly of their deeds and what they've spoken against Him. But you, remember the words of the apostles, who said these would come in the last days. Build yourselves up on your faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Keep in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the Lord. Have mercy on some who doubt, save others, snatching them out of the fire. On some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh. He ends with praise to God.
  • Contend earnestly for the faith.
  • Judgment will come to those who reject the Lord.
  • Pray in the Spirit.
  • Stay in the love of God.
  • Wait anxiously for the mercy of the Lord.
  • He will return with many thousands of His holy ones.
